![]() ![]() Every piece of network-capable hardware comes with a MAC address, but with everything already being assigned a local IP address, why are they necessary? For communications within a network segment, it is used as a network address for most IEEE 802 network technologies, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. A media access control address (MAC address) of a device is a unique identifier assigned to a network interface controller (NIC). For the purpose of connecting to a device, and recovering its data, or setting up a filtering process, or looking up the location. MAC addresses are also necessary for a MAC address lookup, which means finding the geographical location of the device via the MAC address. ![]() These numbers (sometimes called hardware addresses or physical addresses ) are embedded into the network hardware during the manufacturing process, or stored in firmware, and designed to not be modified. The Media Access Control (MAC) address is a binary number used to uniquely identify computer network adapters. ![]()
